History

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND

The amalgamation of the Union of Municipal, Urban, and Local Government Employees led to the formation of the Local Government Workers’ Union in 1960 as an affiliate – national Union of the Trade Union Congress - TUC Ghana.

The Local Government Workers’ Union was registered as a Trade Union by the Registrar of Trade Unions who is also the Chief Labour Officer at the Labour Department in Accra. The Local Government Workers’ Union was duly issued with a collective Bargaining Certificate by the Registrar of Trade Unions in accordance with section 99(1) of the Labour law or the Industrial Relations Act of 2003.

The collective bargaining certificate gave the Union the legal backing and the right to organize and represent all employees in the Local Government Structure and on all issues concerning their Conditions of Service.

For the past years, the Local Government Workers’ Union has performed this role creditably.
